Methods of preservation

Methods of preservation

1. Use of a freezer

The lower temperature in the freezer reduces the rate of enzyme activity that could lead to rotting, thereby reducing the chances of the food from going bad. The food should be sealed properly so that it does not stick to the walls of the freezer. This food can stay up to 6 months while retaining its flavor.

2. Dehydration

Dehydrate the food to 130 degrees Celsius. This will lengthen the period for which the food takes to go bad. Dehydration involves the removal of all the water present in the food. This water acts as a medium over which bacteria and other microorganisms multiply. This is the most suitable method of preservation but the food can last for 4 to 5 weeks.

3. Canning

In this method, the food is put in a solution of ascorbic acid to prevent it from darkening. It is the cheapest method and a very suitable method. Food can last to a maximum of 9 weeks. It is popularly done using cookers and pressure canners.

4. Use of a fridge

Putting the prepared food in a fridge is one of the ways to preserve the food. It is a commonly used method and the food can last for about 14 weeks while very fresh and with the desired flavor.
